Igael Tumarkin (1933-2021) was a prominent Israeli sculptor and painter known for his dynamic and often controversial artworks. Born in Dresden, Germany, and raised in Israel, Tumarkin's artistic career spanned several decades and integrated various mediums. He gained recognition for his innovative use of iron sculpture, found objects such as ship wreckage, weapons, and machinery—reflecting both the physical landscape and socio-political themes of the region.

Among his notable works is 'He Walked in the Fields' (1967), an alternative representation of the heroic Israeli Sabra (Tzabar), referring to the body as a testimony of struggle, vulnerability, and violence. The work, which is part of the Tel Aviv Museum's collection, combines an expressive sculptural technique with modernist forms, blending protest culture in the spirits of Dada, Surrealism, and Pop Art.

Beyond sculpture, Tumarkin worked with painting, printmaking, and outdoor and public art, which are displayed throughout Israel. His works are held in prominent art collections in Israel and abroad, and were shown at esteemed institutions in Israel, Europe and the US, including the Jewish Museum in New York.
