About the Artist

Maya Attoun (1974–2022, Jerusalem), lived and worked in Tel Aviv, was a prominent multidisciplinary, research-based artist focusing on drawing, printmaking, and installation. Her practice engaged in dialogues between thought processes, intuited gestures, materials, and images– reflecting on modernity and the intersection of myth, narrative, and science. Her work integrated recurring themes and dialogues with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, knot theory, science fiction, and Neo-Gothic. In parallel with her practice, she was a lecturer and mentor at the Shenkar Multidisciplinary Art School in Ramat Gan (Israel).

Attoun graduated from The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem (1997) and  earned her MFA from the same institution’s MFA program in 2006. She received numerous recognitions and awards from esteemed institutions and organizations, such as Outset (2018), the Cultural Ministry Award (2018), the Creative Encouragement Award (2012), the Oscar Handler Award (2010), the Young Artist Award (2009), and the Oded Messer Award (2007).

Her works are held in esteemed private and public collections, including The Israel Museum in Jerusalem; The Tel Aviv Museum of Art ; Magasin III Museum for Contemporary Art in Stockholm; The Herzliya Museum ; and The Ashdod Museum of Art.

Maya Atton passed away at the young age of 48, leaving behind a legacy of original artistic language and immense talent. Throughout her career, she created a complex and surprising body of work, imagined and created spaces through her elaborate installations, and developed outstanding projects.
