About the Artist

Jan Tichy (born 1974, Czechoslovakia) is a Chicago-based artist and educator working on the intersection of video, installation, architecture, and photography. His research-based works are known to be socially and politically engaged. Tichy studied art in Israel before earning his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Photography and the Department of Art & Technology Studies.

Tichy has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, CCA Tel Aviv, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Chicago Cultural Center. His works are included in prominent collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Among his renowned projects from recent years are ‘Project Cabrini Green’ (2011), where he referred to the last high-rise building of the Cabrini Green housing projects during its demolition, and ‘Beyond Streaming: A Sound Mural for Flint’ (2017) at the Broad Museum, which engaged teens from Flint and Lansing with the ongoing water crisis. Tichy also initiated ‘Heat Light Water’, a long-term NEA-supported cultural platform in Gary, IN.

The work presented at Givon on paper is from a project exhibited in 2015, featuring a series of silkscreen prints with a repeated pentagonal shape. This multi-layer printing technique depicts various stages of disassembly and assembly, referencing the degrees of exposure and development as formulated by American photographer Ansel Adams using the 'Zone System' method.
