About the Artist

Abraham Walkowitz (1878, Russia - 1965, New York City) was a Jewish Russian-American painter grouped with early American Modernists. His early abstract and figurative collection of drawings remains a significant art historical record to this day.

His artistic path began by making sketches of immigrants in New York's Jewish ghetto, where he lived with his mother. His academic background included the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Académie Julian in Paris (1906), where he was mentored by Jean-Paul Laurens.

He is known for his watercolor scenes of simplified figures in contemporary settings, like city streets and beaches. At the studio of Auguste Rodin, he encountered the influential style of American dancer Isadora Duncan, who would become a frequent subject of his work and an inspiration for his movement studies.

Walkowitz joined photographer Alfred Stieglitz’s avant-garde 291 Gallery and was part of the historical 1913 Armory Show (also known as the International Exhibition of Modern Art), which included works by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, and Georges Braque.

Walkowitz’s series of works featured on Givon on Paper embodies his unique style of drawings, blending pieces from his period as a student at Académie Julian, and are considered rare art historical records.
