About the Artist

Aharon Avni (1906–1951) was an Israeli painter and a member of the ‘Massad’ group of young painters that operated from 1929 to 1930 in Tel Aviv. He was the founder of the 'Avni Institute' in Tel Aviv and one of the founders of HaMidrasha – Faculty of the Arts, Beit Berl, Israel.

Avni was mentored by Isaac Frenkel, one of the leading Jewish artists of the L’École de Paris movement. He lived in Paris from 1930 to 1932, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Upon his return in 1932, he worked as an architect until 1938, when he started teaching painting and art history.

Throughout his career, Avni remained loyal to figurative painting. He exhibited his work in various institutions, including solo shows at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1936, 1944, and 1950). He was awarded the Dizengoff Prize in 1937 and 1948, among other professional recognitions.
