About the Artist
Aharon Kahana (1905–1967) was a German-Jewish painter. In 1922, he began his studies at the Stuttgart Academy of Art and later moved to Berlin and Paris (1927–1929). In 1934, he fled from Europe and immigrated to Palestine.
At that time, Kahana’s painting style varied from post-Cubist and semi-abstract art to realistic painting. In 1938, Kahana received the Dizengoff Prize, and in 1946, he held his first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv.
Kahana’s later works were primarily influenced by the Canaanite movement, a cultural and ideological movement of painters and sculptors founded in 1939. From the 1930s to the 1940s, he explored various styles, including figurative and realistic landscapes and portraits. Subsequently, he transitioned to abstraction, incorporating geometric shapes and European influences. As time progressed and with the founding of the "New Horizons" group, of which he was a founding member, his work evolved to feature more abstract geometric forms, while subtly referencing mythological symbols carved in stone.
His works are included in many private and public art collections, and he received various awards, including the Dizengoff Prize (1938 and 1953).
