About the Artist
Mordechai Ardon (1896–1992) was a prominent Israeli painter, awarded the Israel Prize for Painting (1963) and numerous professional recognitions, including the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1954.
Ardon was the head of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem (1940–1952), and was known for deeply influencing the institution by promoting and integrating the Bauhaus movement (which he studied in Weimar, 1920–1925), modern art, and other international influences within the academy.
Among his notable works is the ‘Ardon Windows’ at the National Library (Givat Ram campus, Hebrew University, Jerusalem), featuring stained glass windows integrated into the library’s entrance wall–depicting the universal peace prophet of the biblical Isaiah (Isha'ayahu).
His works are included in prominent collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels; the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and more.
