About the Artist

Avigdor Stematsky (1908-1989), born in Odessa, was a pioneering painter and print artist, recognized for his significant contributions to Israeli abstract art. He moved to Palestine in 1921 and attended the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. In 1929, he traveled to Paris to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi, where he immersed himself in the Avant-garde art of the early 20th century. Upon returning to Israel, Stematsky established the "Massad" group of young painters that operated in 1929-1930 in Tel Aviv. In the 1950s, he co-founded the artist collective "New Horizons" with fellow artists such as Joseph Zaritsky and Yehezkel Streichman.
