About the Artist
Moshe Gershuni (1936 – 2017) was an influential Israeli painter and sculptor, known for his diverse artistic practice and unique approach to integrating symbols, text, and unconventional materials.
His works are included in prestigious public collections, such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; Jewish Museum, New York; British Museum, London; Groningen Museum, Netherlands; and Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf. His works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both local and international, and continue to be shown to this day.
Throughout his career, Gershuni maintained complex conceptual themes and provoked inquiries that diverged from the norms of his era; he incorporated symbolism related to war, the Holocaust, Christianity, Judaism, and often integrated the figure of the soldier in his repertoire. He blended themes of strength, bravery, power, and homoeroticism while criticizing Israeli Zionism-nationalism society and norms.
