About the Artist
Uri Lifschitz (1936–2011) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and artist who worked with etching, collage, and mixed media. Throughout his career, Lifschitz held numerous exhibitions in Israel and internationally, with his works included in esteemed Israeli collections. He received several awards, notably the Eugene Kolb Prize for Israeli Graphic Art from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1965), the Erasmus Foundation Prize (1966), and the Dizengoff Prize (1985). Givon on Paper features works that are extracted from his renowned practice in printmaking, silkscreen printing, etching, collage, and mixed media.
Lifschitz was recognized for his virtuosity and was among Israel's prominent artists. Known as a controversial figure in the local art scene, he created a diverse and complex body of work spanning over six decades, starting in the 1960s. Lifschitz participated in pivotal moments of Israeli art and culture, including the final exhibition of "New Horizons", alongside artists like Moshe Kupferman, Raffi Lavie, and Igael Tumarkin. He represented Israel at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1969 and exhibited widely in museums and galleries in New York, Brussels, London, and Amsterdam.
Beyond his artistic acclaim, Lifschitz was a prominent figure in Tel Aviv's bohemian community. His work and life challenged established concepts of identity politics, artistic expression, and the role of the artist in Israeli society.
