About the Artist

Moshe Kupferman (1926-2003) was an Israeli painter, known for his abstract works and distinctive signature, exploring the tension between visibility and concealment. He received the Israel Prize for Painting in 2000, and his works are included in prestigious art collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Born in Poland, Kupferman and his family were deported during the war. He immigrated to Israel in 1948 and was one of the founders of the Ghetto Fighters Kibbutz, where he lived until his passing in 2003.

His style evolved in reaction to the disciplines and norms of kibbutz life, reflecting both expressive impulses and emotional restraint. His works are characterized by the use of construction and erasure, and for his artistic consideration of the back of the paper— that embodies another chapter, a contradiction, or a completely new work. His selected works at Givon on Paper demonstrate this technique and artistic vision.

Kupferman’s debut solo exhibition was held at the Israel Museum in 1969, followed by exhibitions at internationally renowned institutions, such the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum of Jewish Art and History, and Carnegie International. In 2002, the Israel Museum hosted a comprehensive retrospective of his work.

His legacy continues in various public collections, as well as at 'The Kupferman Collection House', situated at the Ghetto Fighters Kibbutz (Kibbutz Lohamei Hageta’ot). The unique venue occupies the location of Kupferman’s original atelier and continues to exhibit a permanent display of his work to this day.
