About the Artist
Yair Garbuz (born 1945) is a painter, writer, journalist, satirist, and activist whose work blends American pop art influences with local themes. Early in his career, Garbuz was associated with the "Want of Matter" style, a concept rooted in an exhibition titled "The Want of Matter: A Quality in Israeli Art" curated by Sara Breitberg-Semel at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1986– focusing on raw, simple materials.
His artistic career began with a solo exhibition in 1967 and continued with numerous exhibitions, including participation in the "Nude Exhibition" of the “Ten +” group the same year. Garbuz has garnered multiple awards and recognitions for his work, and exhibited in museums and galleries across Israel and internationally.
In 1973, Garbuz began teaching at the HaMidrasha – Faculty of the Arts, later becoming its head from 1997 to 2011. He also taught at the Avni Institute, Tel Hai College, and The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. He was a member of the “Ten Plus” group founded by Raffi Lavie, who was also one of his mentors as an artist.
Garbuz's works, including those featured in Givon on Paper, are primarily collages that blend symbolic poetry with social critique, termed "sentimental collages" (according to Garbuz), utilizing everyday materials. His compositions often integrate photographs, newspapers, and prints with scribbles, texts, drawings, and erasures, creating new meanings and focal points. The dense, rhythmic compositions convey both chaos and order.
