About the Artist

Tamar Getter (b. 1953) is an Israeli artist, lecturer, writer and scholar, known for her significant contributions to the groundbreaking artists of the 1970s generation. The included works in the platform are part of her series NOTES ON FAMILY KNOT from 2002.

In the early 1970s, she studied under the renowned Israeli abstract painter Raffi Lavie and later pursued literature studies at Tel Aviv University. During this period, she began exhibiting her work, with her first solo exhibition taking place in 1975 (Gilat Gallery, Jerusalem). Just two years later, she held a significant solo exhibition at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, curated by Yona Fischer.

Getter's work often combines utopia and disaster, persistently integrating wounded human bodies with an underlying tension between imperfection and idealized form. Since 1974, her work explores a complex interplay between localized catastrophes and notions of perfection, repeatedly returning to the concept of physical constraint stemming from the disability in her left hand with which she was born. Through her works, Getter continuously confronts this duality, revealing the fragility beneath seemingly complete structures.

Throughout her career, Getter has participated in numerous group shows and produced over 50 independent solo projects. Notable exhibitions include the Venice Biennale in 1982, "Recruits" at the Carmelite Monastery in Frankfurt in 1990, the "Ha'Aretz Building" project in Tel Aviv (1994-5), and projects such as "'U' in Gustave" and "Double Entrances" at the Museum of Art, Ein Harod. In 2010, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art presented a comprehensive retrospective of her works, for which she was awarded the Pundik Prize in the same year.

Getter's works are held in various collections and museums in Israel and abroad. She has been a faculty member and senior lecturer at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem for more than 20 years. Her awards and professional recognitions include the Ohana Prize of the Tel Aviv Museum (1981), the Sandberg Prize of the Israel Museum (1995), the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Scholarship in Frankfurt (1989), and the Dizengoff Prize of the Tel Aviv City (2019).
