About the Artist

Avner Ben-Gal (1966–2024) was an acclaimed Israeli artist and painter. He studied Fine Art at The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, graduating in 1993.

Ben-Gal's paintings depict a range of themes often drawn from imaginary, apocalyptic worlds that evoke a sense of strangeness and tension. In the early 2000s, he explored desolate landscapes and ruined environments obscured by thick smoke, blurring the distinction between natural and man-made destruction. Subsequently, he focused on intricate, multi-detail drawings depicting characters often regarded as marginalized.

Ben-Gal's works were featured in notable exhibitions, such as DARK at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Venice Biennale in 2003. He held solo exhibitions at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2002, 2009), Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel, Switzerland (2008), and the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, United States (2007). Throughout his career, he worked with leading galleries including Sadie Coles HQ in London, Bortolami Gallery in New York, CFA Gallery in Berlin, and more.

In early 2024, Avner Ben-Gal passed away at the young age of 57, leaving behind a profound artistic legacy characterized by his unique expression and visionary approach.
