About the Artist
Gabriel (Gabi) Klasmer (born 1950) is a prominent artist working in Israel and the UK. He received the Moses Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, and his artworks are held in private and public collections worldwide.
Klasmer has exhibited extensively, including significant solo shows at institutions such as the Israel Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum. Among his notable international exhibitions are "Let's Talk Politics" at Galerie Hubertus Wunschik, Mönchengladbach, Germany (2004), as well as the 23rd Sao Paulo Biennale (1996) where he represented Israel.
After studying at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, Klasmer pursued further studies in London in the late 1980s, earning a master's degree at the Royal Academy of Arts (RCA) and later a PhD. He worked as a lecturer in the design department at RCA before returning to Jerusalem in 2014, where he resides and continues to create. From 2014 to 2018, he was the head of HaMidrasha – Faculty of the Arts. Currently, he divides his time between Jerusalem and London, maintaining an active artistic practice.
In the early 1980s, Klasmer explored figurative painting on paper, depicting anonymous figures engaged in various actions. From the 1990s onward, he developed painting techniques reflecting the influence of the computerized world on artistic craftsmanship, blending mechanized processes with traditional methods.
His works featured in Givon on Paper showcase a blend of early figurative works, abstract paintings, and sketches on paper, illustrating a profound dialogue between human creativity and technological interventions in art.
