About the Artist

Osias Hofstätter (1905-1994), born in Galicia (now Poland), was a prominent painter who created throughout most of his adult life, which involved charged experiences of refuge, exile, and loss. His works are primarily known for their use of watercolor on paper, depicting figures, animals, and hybrid creatures with an expressive approach and a distinctive signature. Hofstätter's works explored themes related to his biographical experiences and the human nature, with numerous paintings featuring solitary figures in varied compositions.

His biographical background is unusual; as a Jew on the run throughout the first and second World Wars, Hofstätter lost his family and relatives yet survived concentration and labor camps. It was only after the 2nd World War, in 1949, that he emigrated to Israel.

During his years of displacement, he created numerous paintings and drawings. He first exhibited these works in Israel in 1957, and donated dozens of paintings to the Ghetto Fighters' House Museum (Lohamei HaGeta'ot). In 1968, he exhibited a comprehensive solo show at the Israel Museum, curated by the renowned curator Yona Fischer.

Among the institutions where he held solo exhibitions are the Haifa Museum of Art (1968), the Camden Arts Centre in London (1973), the Tel Aviv Museum (1974), the Herzliya Museum (1987). He received numerous awards for his work, including the Israeli Ministry of Culture (1968), the Dizengoff Prize (1976), and the Discount Bank Prize from the Israel Museum (1991). Hofstätter works are included in prominent private and public art collections worldwide.
