About the Artist

Shmuel Bonneh (1930 – 1999) was born in Poland and immigrated to Palestine with his family in 1936, settling in Haifa. Influenced by post-impressionist painting, his early works encompassed portraits and still lifes.

In 1968, following the Six Day War, Bonneh published a Passover Haggadah featuring his illustrations inspired by the war's events, commenting on the charged Israeli landscape through his practice. In the 1970s, Judaism and Biblical themes and narratives began to appear in his work. In parallel, Bonneh focused on depicting village life, agricultural work, and the Israeli landscape—evident in his renowned series "Maps of Israel," where he introduced a distinctive style termed "Ornamental Geometric Expressionism.

Bonneh exhibited internationally, showcasing his art at the Venice Biennale (1958, 1960), the first International Biennale of Young Artists in Paris (1959), and various exhibitions in Germany and Paris, including "Ecole de Paris" at the Charpentier National Gallery (1963).
