About the Artist
Sigalit Landau (b. 1969, Jerusalem) is considered to be one of Israel’s most prominent contemporary artists of her generation. Landau incorporates sculpture, installation, video, photography, and painting. Her extensive practice relates to private and collective memory, archaic and utopic myths in dialogue with contemporary themes of the human condition. Using a diverse range of materials and interacting with the human body, Landau weaves biographical, public, intimate, historical, and current narratives in her work. She was first internationally recognized in 1997, when she participated in documenta X in Kassel.
Her creative practice also undertakes an interpretation of the history and nature of Israel. She is widely known for her extensive body of work 'Salt Years', featuring salt sculptures, photography, and video works—in which Landau addressed female identity and bodily experience, as well as the charged socio-political state, man-made disasters, and the consequential threat to the Dead Sea itself.
She graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 1994. Following several years of living and working in Europe and the United States, she currently resides in Tel Aviv. Her work has been exhibited extensively in museums and leading institutions worldwide, including MoMA, NY; The Brooklyn Museum of Art; MAGASIN III, Stockholm; Yokohama Triennale, Japan; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; The Israeli Pavilion, The Venice Art Biennale (1997, 2011); Documenta X, Kassel; MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona), among others.
Throughout her career, Landau received significant awards and professional recognitions, including the French Republic Chevalier decoration of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2017), the Honorary Doctorate degree from Ben Gurion University of the Negev (2017), The Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2016), the Nathan Gottesdiener Foundation Israeli Art Award, Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2004), the Wolf Foundation Ingeborg Bachman Scholarship (1998), and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship (1994).
Landau’s works are included in prominent collections worldwide, e.g.: The Brooklyn Museum, MACBA, MoMA, Centre Georges Pompidou, The Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and MoCK (Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow).
